A Coursera course on computer architecture covering how processors are organized and how hardware components such as the CPU, memory hierarchy, and instruction pipelines fit together. The course is taught by Princeton's Computer Architecture instructors as a university-style offering.

One commenter recommends it as a sound way to learn how CPU pieces fit together, and suggests pairing it with hands-on VHDL or Verilog work.

    I'd recommend this course: https://www.coursera.org/course/comparch

If you're too advanced for this, I'd consider writing some behavioral VHDL or Verilog for a few of the units to see how a few of the pieces fit together.
