An introductory edX course on Java programming from HKUSTx, covering basics through activity-by-activity exercises such as a pyramid-printing problem. It is the first part of a two-part series, with Part 2 following.
Commenters point to it as good material that builds up step by step, though one notes the instructor can be hard to understand.

You'll be right mate. Programming is just something that takes a lot of practice and once something 'clicks' it becomes second nature. It really helps having good material to learn from that builds up activity by activity where later activities use the things you learn from earlier activities…
I would recommend doing week 1 of Udacity and edX course to get a feel of them https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-java-programming-part-1-hkustx-comp102-1x-0 https://www.udacity.com/course/cs046 The edX course starts today while the Udacity one is selfpaced.
