I suggest taking a look at readings section of top statistics courses. one from mit ocw is http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-05-introduction-to...
edx, coursera, udacity also offer many targeted statistics courses, you can check what book they reccommend.
also Royal statistical society London reccomennds a reading list for its examinationsome of which are classics
I read Probablity & statistics by walpole and myers in my bachelors and it was also a wonderful book.
The best book I've found about statistical inference is this one: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/188652923X/ref=nosim/... it comes with the bonus that you can take the full course (video lectures, recitations, assignments and quizes) on mit: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-comput...
I would actually suggest another set of MIT courses that I think are more relevant:
Linear Algebra http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-06-linear-algebra-...
Probability and Statistics http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-comput...
and finally
